Development

Sunday, March 4th, 2007

There is something that I want to point out today, so that you can be aware of it and monitor it in yourself and those around me.

The following regularly occurs. A person starts to have their first insights into the nature of themselves, and life starts to be seen from a spiritual angle, which leads to their viewpoint on life broadening. So far, these are all excellent developments. The person then compares their viewpoint, now that it is illuminated a little bit by a few rays of spiritual insight, to the largely ignorant viewpoint which they previously held, and which they assume that the rest of the world still holds. They then start to think of themselves as spiritual prodigies, understanding much more of Life and the Universe and Spirit and God than other peope. Meanwhile, all that they have done, is opened their eyes. The first rays of light are piercing through to their mind, and they think that they have the whole picture.

This is like the toddle who starts to take their first steps, and thinks that they are suddenly masters of the world because they are more capable and powerful than they were a month ago. Yet the rest of the world views them as toddlers, barely able to stand on their own two feet. When we are proud of our spiritual development, we are like these toddlers. It is ridiculous to think like this. If you were advanced, you would not be on Planet Earth. Sorry, but that’s the truth. Planet Earth is like a kindergarten for souls, but this is not to negate the important of Earth and Humanity. These are key periods in the development of souls in our stream of consciousness. For it marks a turning period, where self awareness develops that is missing in animals, slowly turning in Self Awareness, which is sadly still missing in most humans.

I used to hope that humanity would slowly evolve beyond this, but I don’t think that will happen. For as souls start to achieve a more illuminated and spiritual state, they will not be manifesting as human beings any longer, but will exist in a more appropriate form for their state of being.

The yogis, as always, sum it up beautifully. Whatever your level of development and existence, there are beings as far below you as a dung beetle, and beings so much more highly developed than you that you can hardly imagine them, or the existence which they lead.

While we must not ever be over optimistic in evaluating our state of development, it is important to respect the current state of all Life, especially human life. Animal spirits are where they should be for their current state of Development. And every human, no matter how repulsive their character and behaviour, has come a very long way to be at the stage where they are now. While they have a lot to learn, there is much that they have learned, the hard way.

One of the most important breakthroughs that each one of us has to make in our development, is to learn to look at each other and not see individuals from different backgrounds, with different desires. No, what we need to see is other souls, the same as us. They may be in different forms, and in different places, but they are on the same wonderful and divine road. Fellow travellers and for them we must feel empathy and compassion, and with eyes wide open helping each other to be the best that we can be. Then you can truly be proud of your life, then you are achieving something.

To end off, today after work I popped over the mountain and went for a bodyboard session at sunset at Glenn Beach, between Clifton and Camps Bay in Cape Town. The water had a mercurial appearance and the sun was glinting off it. The mountains stood majestically behind it all, and as the sun lowered rays broke through the clouds and lit up the mountain with an orange hue. What a magnificent way to end the day. When we take the time out to enjoy it, Life is truly wonderful.
